Although it’s an off-roader, the Outlander offers a choice of two-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive modes. Driving just two wheels helps economy: the Outlander should manage around 40.9mpg driving on its own. However, as we discovered, you’ll need to select the four-wheel-drive mode for tricky hill starts.
Performance is similar to the other Mitsubishi in this class (which uses the same engine), although the outfit soon became unsettled through the lane-change manouevre.
The Outlander found favour with our practicality judges, and the generous list of standard equipment should take the sting out of that £23k price tag.
