The Kia Cee’d usually performs well at the Tow Car Awards, and the latest Sportswagon (estate) continues that tradition.
As a tow car, the Cee’d’s stability is its most impressive strength. In the lane-change test the Kia held on even when really pushed hard, and wouldn’t let the caravan bully the back of the car. At high speeds in a straight line the Kia needed the odd steering correction, but nothing untoward given the strength of the wind.
With a less powerful engine than the Octavia and Golf, it’s no surprise that the Cee’d’s acceleration is more leisurely. Overtaking when towing will need a long, straight stretch of road and a heavy right foot. We’re more disappointed by the Cee’d’s lacklustre 12.7m stopping distance from 30mph.
As the only estate in the lightest weight class, the Sportswagon offers 528 litres of space with the rear seats upright. All but one item of luggage from our test load fitted, although owners will need to take all their bags out if they need to get to the compact spare wheel.
