It’s a shame that the Ceed has a towing limit of just 1000kg, which is significantly less than the 85% match figure. Within this restriction, it tows with stability and composure.
The 1.4-litre engine feels strong enough to tow more than a tonne, pulling from 30-60mph in 10.6 seconds.
However, when you try starting on a hill, you realise why the legal maximum is so low. It took a careful balance of clutch and throttle to pull over the 1-in-6 slope.
Most of our test drivers experienced a burning smell from the clutch afterwards.
