Around £30,000 for the 3.0 TDI is a keen price for such a big 4×4, especially when even the entry-level model comes with air-con, a CD player, alloy wheels and an electronic stability programme complete with a towing mode.
Your money doesn’t buy you the seven seats of a Land Rover Discovery, but you do get enough space for five and their luggage. It’s a well-built cabin, too.
The Touareg performed well in our tow tests. It had no trouble accelerating up to 60mph, and can hold that speed uphill and into a strong wind. Even our lane-change test failed to fluster the VW.
It’s an impressive showing, even if some other big 4x4s offer more flexible cabins or a comfier ride.
