The Invincible is the bells-and-whistles version of the Toyota Hilux, so you get just about every toy as standard. Its 3.0-litre engine has more power than the Ranger’s, which gives it a respectable 30-60mph time of 21.4 seconds.
At a steady 60mph the Toyota feels stable, although it starts to wander between 60 and 70mph. However, it was utterly wrong-footed by the lane change, and the back of the car slid even on the slowest run between the cones. A handbrake that would only hold with a very firm pull did it no favours on the hill start.
It’s no surprise that a pick-up has plenty of luggage space, while the full-size spare wheel and the comprehensive handbook earned the Hilux points for practicality.
