If we had deep enough pockets, the Range Rover Sport would be the car we’d most like to tow with. The Sport is a phenomenal tow car, albeit not as practical as the Land Rover Discovery and considerably more expensive.

Put price aside for a moment, though. You won’t find a more capable heavyweight tow car. Dawdling traffic won’t be in the way for long, as the sprint from 30-60mph takes just 9.6 seconds, even with a big twin-axle caravan in tow.

It’s the Range Rover Sport’s stability that really stands out, though. The lane-change test usually shows up any slight weakness, but the Sport breezed through with hardly any lean from the car and with the caravan following obediently behind. Towing at 60mph feels like 40mph in the Sport, and the Range Rover seemed impervious to crosswinds, even at speeds that would have your collar felt on a British motorway.

Without a caravan, the Range Rover Sport is more agile and rewarding to drive than the Discovery, but still maintains a supple ride over rough roads.

Inside, the car is beautifully finished and luxuriously equipped – as it should be at this price. A third row of seats is optional, but the Discovery is a better bet if you regularly use seats six and seven. Even if you don’t, the Land Rover has more space for bags and makes the more practical car.
