It’s a real shame the Ford Grand Tourneo Connect is saddled with such a low towing limit. Being restricted to 845kg rules the Ford out for anything other than trailer tents or ultralight caravans, and we’ve marked the car down accordingly.
What the Ford can tow, though, it tows well. In the lane-change test the Grand Tourneo Connect remained balanced and stable, even with the trailer moving around violently behind it. Whether towing at over 60mph or recovering from sharp steering inputs, the Ford felt secure and in control.
The handbrake held the outfit still on a 1-in-6 slope, and the Ford pulled up the hill easily. Some clutch slip was needed to reverse uphill.
In everyday driving the Ford performs well for something that’s based on a commercial vehicle, but this car isn’t focused on pleasing the driver; it’s all about having lots of space without spending too much money. There’s room inside for seven, and when the two rear seats aren’t in use the luggage area is huge, with plenty of room for our typical load of holiday luggage. Even with the seven seats in place there’s a useful amount of space for bags.
What’s more, there’s no doubt this is a lot of car for just £20,000.
